Esteban Ocon kørte i Renault 2.0 fra 2012-2013, hvorefter han skiftede til Formula Renault 3.5 i 2014. Samme år fik den unge franskmand sin debut i Formel 1 for Lotus F1 Team under træningen til Abu Dhabis GP.

I 2015 blev det til en enkelt sæson i GP3, hvor Ocon vandt mesterskabet. Samme år deltog han i tyske DTM, men en 26-plads kunne bestemt ikke kaldes en succes.

Esteban Ocon fik sin løbsdebut i Formel 1 for det nu lukkede Manor Racing. Allerede dengang var han tilknyttet Mercedes som udviklingskører, men i 2016 også som testkører for Renault.

Sæsonerne 2017-18 blev kørt hos det daværende Sahara Force India/Racing Point Force India, hvor han var midtpunkt i nogle spektakulære sammenstød med teamkammeraten Sergio Perez. Da pladserne til 2019-sæsonen skulle fordeles, blev Ocon ofret i typisk Formel 1-politik og en ulige kamp mod konkurrenten til det ene ledige sæde, Lance Stroll, søn til Racing Points nye ejer Lawrence Stroll. Resultatet var forudsigeligt, og Ocon måtte sidde på sidelinjen og vente i hele 2019.

I 2020 kom Ocon tilbage ti Formel 1, denne gang hos Renault, hvor han blev kollega med Ricciardo. Her sluttede han VM som nummer 12, langt efter Ricciardo.

I 2021 skiftede Renault navnet ppå deres Formel 1 hold ud til Alpine, samtidig forlod Ricciardo holdet, til fordel for et sæde hos McLaren. Ny mand på holdet blev den erfarne Fernando Alonso, der sluttede som nummer 10, lige foran Ocon.

I 2022 fortsatte Ocon og Alonso sammen, denne gang sluttede Ocon som den bedste af de to, som nummer 8, mens Alonso sluttede som nummer 9.

I 2023 valgte Alonso at skifte til Aston Martin, mens Alpine ansatte Ocons gamle franske fjende, Pierre Gasly som hans kollega. Gasly slog Ocon i første sæson, hvor de to sluttede som nummer 11 og 12

Ocon og Gasly fortsatte sammen hos Alpine i 2024, men der var ikke noget vendskab mellem de to, hvilket fik Renault ledelsen til at fyre Ocon, der dog fik lov til at kører sæsonen ud, med undtagelse af sidste løb. Han sluttede som nummer 14.

2024 så ud til at blive sidste sæson, men Ocon formåede at skubbe Kevin Magnussen ud af Formel 1, således han i 2025 vil stille til start for HAAS.
